Colt Technologies is one of the leading information delivery platform providers in the world, with many of the world’s largest organisations using its ICT infrastructure services.

Colt contacted Striking Faces with a view to creating a virtual tour of one of its London data centres. During the initial project discussions Colt outlined objectives for the tour and the areas of the facility that they wanted to showcase. Once in consultation it became apparent that Google Maps Business View was not appropriate for the Colt Data Centre due to potential security implications. A Data Centre, by necessity, is ultra secure. Physical security plays a vital role and access is highly restricted due to the sensitivity of the information held on any of the systems within.

The issue of security became a significant challenge but once we had ruled out Google Maps Business View it was agreed that the only solution would be to build a bespoke virtual tour. Our goal is always to provide the client with the tour and solution that best fits the business. After considering several proprietary 360 tour solutions a Striking 360 became a clear favourite.

All parties agreed that a Striking 360 was the best approach, where the tour could be created by Striking Faces and hosted by Colt themselves. Immediate advantages meant that the tour has no links to the outside world. At the same time it provides clients with the ability to look around and allows Colt to showcase their facilities without having to allow physical access to the premises. Additional benefits included adding a floor plan and map navigation, allowing the user to click on highlighted areas. It also enables users to navigate to different areas of the facility while avoiding moving through sensitive, highly secure areas. Also the site is enormous, so Striking Places would only shoot the area deemed legally accessible to the public.

The photo shoot proved a little tricky due mainly to lighting complications. And although the bespoke tour build went through a number of development iterations the finished tour was very well received.

The panoramic photography was reused at a later date by Colt in a completely different configuration to quite a different brief. The tour can be customised and even rebranded which is an obvious cost saving to the client.

The Colt Striking 360 tour delivered a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the high tech environment that we rarely have the opportunity to experience. It felt like being in a spaceship in there! A unique opportunity.
